The board above is already a real game: you move, a local AI answers on this device, and nobody asks for an email. What follows is just enough checkers to know what you’re looking at — puzzles, a short strategy note, doors when you want them. The oak stays the point.

What checkers is

Checkers — American / English draughts — is a two-player game on an 8×8 board. You use only the dark squares. Each side starts with twelve men on the three rows nearest them. White moves first. You win by capturing all of the opponent’s pieces or by blocking them so they have no legal move.

Men move diagonally forward one square, or jump over an enemy piece to the empty square beyond. If a jump is available, you must take it — including multi-jump sequences in one turn. When a man reaches the far back row, it is crowned and becomes a king. Kings move and jump diagonally forward or backward.

That’s the sport, more or less. Tournament clocks and opening books are optional layers people glue on later. You do not need any of them to play an honest game on the board above — Medium by default, Easy through Master when you want knobs, or a local two-player pass on the same screen.

Puzzles

A puzzle is one position with a job: find the jump (or short sequence) that wins material or sets up a crown — a double jump, a piece that looked safe until the diagonal opened, a forced trade you almost skipped. You are not grinding a streak counter or defending a daily flame. Sit with the board, try a line, reset if you miss.

Use them when a full game feels like too much homework. The puzzles page keeps the same oak table; it just skips the opening shuffle and drops you into the sharp bit.

Strategy

Beginners do not need twenty named systems. Early on, three habits beat a memorized tree: keep a man on the back row so crowns aren’t free, trade when you’re ahead in pieces, and advance toward the king row with a plan instead of random hops.

There is a one-page strategy note for that — habits, not a wiki farm of trap catalogs. Come back to labels later if you enjoy them. First, stop giving away pieces on move four.

Half the checkers sites online treat the board like a prize behind glass. Click Play. Wait for a lobby. Maybe sign in so they can graph your rating later. Here the pieces are already sitting on the oak. Title, trust line, board. You don’t earn move one by reading a sales pitch first.

If that feels abrupt, good. Checkers is abrupt once someone leaves a piece hanging on a diagonal. The page should match the mood — quiet wood, clear squares, no neon mall of other titles begging for a second click.

CheckersGridBase is a checkers page — not a rating ladder, not a matchmaking lobby, not an “unlock games” directory with twenty neon buttons. Not an APK, not a .exe, not a “mod pack.” This is not a chess site either; if you wanted rooks and en passant, you’re on the wrong felt.

Play checkers free in your browser. No download and no sign-up: four AI levels up to Master, or a friend on one screen. If that sounds like less product than you wanted, you’re probably looking for a platform. We’re a page with a board.

Stuff people ask after move one

Okay, what is CheckersGridBase actually?: It’s a page where you can play checkers in the browser. You open the tab, the board is already there, and you make a move — no lobby, no “click Play to start” tax. We only do checkers on this domain. If you were hoping for a wall of other games, you’re in the wrong house.
Do I have to sign up or make an account first?: You don’t. Open the tab and move a piece — there’s no email step, no “create an account to continue,” and no rating profile we keep for you. If another site made you register just to touch a man, that wasn’t us, and it won’t be required here either.
Can I play against a real person online?: Not with two people joining from different devices. Against the computer, the opponent runs on your machine. If someone is next to you, switch to Local 2-player and pass the phone or laptop between turns. There’s no matchmaking lobby for strangers on the internet.
Does this work on my phone, or only on a computer?: Both. On a phone you tap the piece, then tap the square it should go to. On a desktop you can click the same way, or drag the piece across the board if that feels more natural. Legal moves light up either way — and leaving a piece hanging feels the same on any screen.
I had a win/loss record yesterday. Where did it go?: It lived in this browser’s local storage, not in an account in the cloud. Clear site data, switch browsers, or use a private window and that little W/L/D tally starts over. We don’t sync it anywhere, so there’s nothing to “restore” from a server.
Why is the sound off when I open the page?: On purpose. A lot of people open this between classes or on a shared couch, and a sudden capture click is rude. Sound stays quiet until you turn it on yourself. We also don’t remember last week’s “on” setting and blast you the next time you load the tab.
Is the computer running some cloud engine?: The opponent thinks in a background worker on your own device, so you’re not waiting on a remote “engine online” server. Easy, Medium, Hard, and Master only change how hard that local search tries — harder means it looks deeper, not that we’ve rented a titled player.
Is there an APK or something I should download?: Play in the browser. We don’t ship an installer, App Store app, or APK. If someone sends you a file named something like “checkers-unblocked” and asks you to run it, leave it — that isn’t how this site works, and it isn’t something we publish.
